May · Day 16
A good conscience before the world
Reading
Practical meditation
Peter commands us to always be ready to answer concerning the hope, but with meekness and fear. Truth does not need arrogance in order to be strong. A clean conscience carries more weight than an aggressive tone disguised as courage.
When faith is questioned, we can shrink, attack, or perform a character. But the Christian answer comes from another place: Christ sanctified as Lord in the heart. The defense of the faith begins before the mouth; it begins in inward government.
The world already has enough noise. It needs to see firm hope, clear mind, and a meek spirit. The best answer is not the one that wins the scene; it is the one that preserves Christ as Lord of the conscience.
Examine
Does my way of defending the faith reveal Christ as Lord or merely my ego on alert?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, be sanctified as Lord in my heart. Govern my mouth from the spirit, give me courage without pride and meekness without fear. May my answer arise from a clean conscience before you. Amen.
Practice
Let us respond today to a tension with deliberate meekness, without abandoning the truth.
