May · Day 9
Obedience to the truth
Reading
Practical meditation
Peter shows us that the soul is purified by obedience to the truth. James speaks of the implanted Word — not merely heard or studied, but sown into the spirit as life. The truth of God was not given to be examined by the mind; it was given to be received in the spirit and to produce organic transformation from within.
There is a way of handling the truth that does not transform. The outer man develops doctrinal fluency — he knows the passages, defends the positions, uses the correct language — while the same impulses continue governing the soul. Truth received only in the mind may enlighten, but it does not purify. When it does not descend to the spirit and is not obeyed, it becomes religious language in the mouth of an untreated soul.
Peter connects obedience to the truth with sincere brotherly love. The truth that purifies the spirit does not make us cold or superior; it makes us able to love without pretending. This love does not arise from the soul's effort to be more tolerant or generous; it is the life of Christ freely expressed when the spirit is open and the truth has found passage.
Examine
Have I merely agreed with the truth, or have I allowed it to purify my soul and transform my love for the brothers and sisters?
Prayer
Lord, give me meekness to receive your Word and obedience to let it operate in me. Purify my soul, sow the truth into my spirit, and express Christ in my love for the brothers and sisters. Amen.
Practice
When reading the portion of the Word today, let us stop managing it with the mind and open the spirit to receive it as life.
